Serena Williams is finally giving her opinion about an impersonation that fellow tennis player, Caroline Wozniacki, did of her last month.
Wozniacki did the random Williams impersonation in the middle of a tennis match with Maria Sharapova, by stuffing her bra and panties with towels and mocking Williams’ trademark tennis “style.”
A video of the incident went viral, and some viewers saw it as a harmless joke, while others thought it had racist undertones.
In an email, Williams finally addressed the incident herself. Although she admitted that she hasn’t seen the clip, she vouched for Wozniacki, saying:
“I know Caro and I would call her my friend and I don’t think she (meant) anything racist by it.”
Williams also added that Wozniacki isn’t the first tennis pro to imitate her on the court:
(Roddick) and (Djokovic) do it all the time and Caro does (it) and now it’s racist?? At the end of the day I spend my time focused on things to become better and not bring me down.
Although she wasn’t personally offended, Williams did acknowlege that Wozniacki might need to switch up her act:
“I must add if people feel this way she should take reason and do something different next time. ”
In case you missed it, watch the impersonation below, and let us know your thoughts! Is Williams right to not be offended, or should she check her friend?
