Seth MacFarlane’s opening monologue during Sunday night’s Oscars was full of inappropriate jokes, but it was the Chris Brown, Rihanna jab that really caused a shake up.
While introducing Django Unchained, MacFarlene compared the movie to Brown’s 2009 assault of on-again off-again girlfriend, Rihanna. “This is the story of a man fighting to get back his woman, who’s been subjected to unthinkable violence. Or as Chris Brown and Rihanna call it, a date movie,” Seth joked.
The punchline received a few giggles from the audience, but didn’t sit well with some fans who took to Twitter to blast the Ted director. “And this is exactly why he’s not funny,” @SmallTownLeah tweeted, and @BabeParker added, “#OSCARS Worst Moments: that Rihanna joke.”
Seth continued to make cracks about Tarantino’s spaghetti western, a film that excessively uses the “N” word. “I’m told the screenplay is loosely based off of Mel Gibson’s voicemails,” the host quipped.
MacFarlane had his fair share of critics, but ratings for the show were through the roof. Sunday night’s Oscars had the highest ratings since 2007 when Ellen DeGeneres hosted.
